So, the team went visiting the Lakeside Arts gallery at the University of Nottingham and I decided to write about my favourite exhibition/ gallery.
My favourite exhibition was Rana Begum's "Space, Light and Colour" located at the Sir Harry and Djanogoly Gallery.
Before I go into why I liked it, I thought her prspective was interesting. She sees space, light and colour as raw materials whereas I would say that I have treated the three in my designs so far as whole elements. Her overall exhibiion was inspired by the forms that exist within Islamic art and archtecture and how that could be manipulated in design.
The first room feels light, it is painted white and its openings are close to the ceiling to avoid any glare or interferance with the art. At some few points in the space, there are posts of different sizes, hanging on the wall, leaning on the wall thaat create an illusion, i walk back and forth in the room like a child seeing her reflection for the first time, the colours and reflections seen when going are n the same while coming back and i think to myself, cool!
I look ahead and cage-like yellow, red and grey structure greets me, it is Begum's "No. 670- Mesh installation". It is interactive, it is puzzling, there ia path and it is enclosed at the same time. It seemed complex but i walked through anyway; it felt open at some point, tight at another point- but it was just what i needed. How far will i go to engage with an art that seems difficult because in an art space is where those rare feelings should be provoked, it should cause you to question. I did not fully understand it but confusion is not the enemy.
I walk back through a wooden door into another room, its purity greets me. Placed around the room irregularly, are black stools, mounted on them are objects of colours. Light floods in through the opening in the ceiling, casts a highlight underneath the colour on the wall and the ceiling further graces the floor with its light.
This space contrasts with the Weston Gallery, were findings had to be preserved so the room was dark, the lights were dim. There seemed to be a lot of text that got me bored but I guess it sits well with the gallery'sparticular theme- origins of fairytales.
